Chapter 16: She has Me
Chapter 16: She has Me
Hardly had Ben left than Kim rushed into the ward with food.
"Claudia, honey, I brought you chicken soup. Do you want some?" Kim shook the meal box in her
hands and asked with a bright smile.
Claudia couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight of Claudia, nodding vigorously.
Kim set up a bed table and put the chicken soup and pretzel on it. When she was sitting aside peeling
a boiled egg, Claudia said in sign language, "Thank you!"
Claudia knew very well that without Kim, Ben wouldn’t have entered the delivery room.
In that case, she would have been lying in the morgue now.
Kim patted Claudia on the shoulder and smiled. "You don't have to be so courteous. We’re besties, and
that’s what I should do."
Claudia nodded to show gratitude.
“Hey, come on.” Kim said bashfully and added, “By the way, I just saw the baby in the incubator. He’s
so cute and he takes after you.”
Surprised, Claudia beamed with pleasure.
"He’s so lucky to have both of his parents’ good genes! Ben is so handsome, and you’re so pretty, and
that’s why your son is so good-looking!"
Kim made up her mind and muttered to herself, "I’ll get myself a handsome husband in the future too!
For my kid’s sake!"
Claudia gave a bitter smile, urging Kim to eat with her.
Director Gerren’s office door was pushed open by Marshall. When he got in, he locked the door behind
him.
Stunned, Gerren asked, "Hey, what brought you here, Mr. Cooper? You wanna share some dark
secrets with me?"
“You think?!” Marshall said furiously when he tossed the copies of all of Claudia’s pregnancy check-up
reports on the desk.
Gerren cast a look at them and looked away instantly. Apparently, she felt guilty, "What?"
“When Claudia was giving birth to her baby, you said it yourself that the baby was in a transverse
position and it was a difficult labor, but why none of the reports indicate so?” Marshall questioned.
Gerren frowned, "Well, things change, and sometimes there's not enough time to write everything
down..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Marshall chimed in, "Oh come on, we’re both doctors. Stop
fooling me like I’m one of your patients!"
Now that Marshall got it all out in the open, Gerren could no longer cover up the truth.
She sighed and explained, "I had no choice. The Evans promised to give me one million dollars if I do
this right. You know, my daughter is studying abroad, and I need the money..."
“One million dollars...” Marshall scowled at her and flared up. “So a life is only worth one million
dollars?”
“I work hard and I don’t live an easy life. I would have been lucky to have one million.”
Marshall was furious. If she wasn’t a middle-aged woman, he would have punched her in the face!
Marshall remained silent for a long while before saying in a cold voice, "You’re a woman and you have
a daughter. How would you feel if this happened to your daughter?"
“Well, my daughter has a good mother. I will definitely be there for her when she's in labor. Also, I won’t
allow my daughter to marry some rich guy just for his money. That girl should have known herself
better - does she deserve to be Mr. Crawford’s wife?”
“You...”
Marshall was so angry that he wished he could end her life.
It was hard for him to accept that a doctor should have said something like that!
However, before Marshall could do anything, the locked door was kicked open from outside!
The loud bang even startled the nurses at the nurse station.
Standing at the door with a sullen face, Ben stepped in with cold eyes under Gerren’s astonished gaze.
Each mighty step he took was like a heavy tread on her heart.
“Yes, my wife can’t speak, but she’s also the lady of the Evans family! I won’t allow anyone to humiliate
her!”
Fury was simmering in Ben’s eyes, “And also, it’s true that her mother wasn’t there for her, but I will
always have her back!”
Ben gave a sneer and said faintly, “What does your daughter have?”
Gerren’s mind went blank in embarrassment and dared not say anything anymore.
She could only nod and apologize.
Ben said before leaving, “You won't be a doctor from now on! I won’t allow it.”
“I...” She was in total shock.
She had offended someone that she couldn't afford to offend! If she had known it, she wouldn’t have
dared do anything to Claudia...
The news that the Crawford family got a little heir made headlines in all newspapers. People even sent
their best wishes to Ben and Claudia on Twitter.
Scrolling her phone on the sofa, Amber clenched her teeth in anger. “That bitch didn’t die, and she’s
got everyone on her side!”
“Enough, what’s done is done.” Blair came into the room and tossed Amber’s coat to her and went on,
"Let’s go to the hospital now."
“I’m not going anywhere!” Amber growled through gritted teeth. She wished she could wring Claudia’s
neck and make her disappear forever.
However, Blair tried to persuade Amber. “You have to go with me. After all, Claudia is a Evans. As the
members of the Evans family, we have to be there to show some support after she gave birth.”
Now that Blair said so, Amber took her coat reluctantly and went downstairs.
Blair kept nagging while a cold male voice split the air from downstairs.
“Don’t bother going to the hospital!”
Blair and Amber followed the voice and saw Nate standing downstairs in a nice suit with an indifferent
look.
“Nate, what are you doing here...” Amber walked up to him in confusion.
Nate said, “I’m here to deliver a message for Mr. Crawford - stay away from Mrs. Crawford from now
on.”
“What?” Blair was shocked, “I’m her mother! How can I stay away from my daughter?”
Amber also came downstairs and said, “Nate, you’d better get this straight. Ben won’t do this to us!”
Nate took out a document written by Doctor Gerren in person which proved that it was Blair and Amber
who had bribed her to fake a fatal difficult labor during Claudia’s delivery.
Astonished, Blair was in panic with the paper slid from her hand.
“This is ridiculous! That Gerren made this up! This is a trap”, Amber retorted.
Nate frowned, took out the phone from his pocket and played a recording.
It was a conversation about Blair promising one million dollars to Gerren when the job was done.
Amber was stupefied, “Well...”
“I can tell you must be upset since your plot has come to light and fallen through! Mrs. Crawford needs
proper rest and doesn’t want to see you two, so please stay away from her!” Property © of NôvelDrama.Org.
Nate tried his best to be polite. When the message was delivered, he turned around and left.
Blair collapsed to the floor in a trance. Meanwhile, she was aware that the reason Ben didn’t turn her in
to the police was to keep it as a leverage on her, not to leave her some dignity.
Probably, the Evans family was doomed forever under the shadow of the Crawfords!
Unconvinced, Amber ran out after Nate.
Amber didn’t have to guess and knew who the distant-looking man sitting in the back seat of the Rolls-
Royce out of the house was. She rushed up to the car.
“Ben, hear me out please...”
Amber slapped at the car window frantically and explained anxiously, “I didn’t do that on purpose! It’s
just that I’m so deeply in love with you! Ben, I’ve been in love with you since my childhood! I envy
Claudia for being your wife...”
“I know I was wrong. Please forgive me this time. I beg of you!”
Amber pleaded with total sincerity. She wept and wailed, and almost fell on her knees. Anyone would
be touched at the sight of her miserable look.
Nate couldn’t bear to watch anymore. He turned to Ben and said, “Mr. Crawford?”
“Let’s go!”
All Nate got was Ben’s cold instruction. His voice was deep with a sure tone.
“Yes, sir,” Nate said,
started the car and drove away.
The car hurtled away beside Amber. She tried to catch up with it but failed, tears streaming down her
face like a broken line of beads.
“Ben...”
Crouching down, she held her face in her hands, weeping aloud.
However, after she calmed down, Amber sobbed, anger welling up insider her. That bitch Claudia, she
was the one to blame!
Amber was determined to make her suffer by all means...
