Chapter 974: Self-awareness

Embarrassed that she couldn’t fit in with them, after all, she wasn’t close to them.
Envious of their relationships, whether as friends or superiors and subordinates, they all get along so well.
The women in the group also look good, their lives must be good to have such good complexions.
Sacha saw Verda’s embarrassment and took the initiative to talk to her, “Let’s have a drink together.”
Sacha picked up her glass of milk, “Sorry, I can’t drink alcohol.”
Verda poured herself a glass of wine, “It’s nice to meet you.”
She then looked at everyone, “I’m happy to meet all of you.”
“We’re happy to meet you too,” Luna said.
Luna looked at Freya, “Let’s have a drink, the four of us.”
She was referring to the group of women.
Freya nodded in agreement.
She picked up a glass of wine, and Morton reached out his hand, but Freya said, “You can’t drink, here’s some milk for you.”
Freya handed the milk to Morton.
Morton refused; he just wanted the wine in Freya’s hand.
Elijah picked him up again.
Morton’s eyes were red, on the verge of tears.
Freya took a clean glass, poured juice into it, and handed it to him. He thought the contents of the cup were the same as Freya’s, and immediately felt happy.
As long as it’s what she wants, he’s happy, regardless of how it tastes.
“Children are all like this,” Luna said.
Freya added, “Yes, now he is curious about everything, and wants everything.”
Freya raised her glass, “Let’s have a drink together.”
The four women had a drink together.
After the meal, Verda had a preliminary understanding of the people at the table.
With such harmony and good interaction, they must be good people.
People with even a little bit of caution cannot get along so well.
However, what Verda didn’t know was that their personalities were indeed good, but their good relationship wasn’t solely based on good character.
Orion and Elijah had known each other for a long time, their relationship was good. Orion and Freya also had a senior-junior relationship, and their relationship was also good. Luna and Freya were best friends, now that Freya is married to Elijah, Orion and Luna are together, making their relationship even closer.
Xander and Evan had initially followed Elijah; they were Elijah’s right-hand men. Orion had previously taken care of Elijah’s body, so naturally they knew each other and have been getting along for many years.
Although Elijah had flaws in his personality (being cold and aloof), he treated the people around him well, and those who followed him were loyal. They complemented each other and needed each other.
As the dinner ended, Orion suggested, “Xander, why don’t you take Verda home?”
Xander looked at Orion, as if to say, “Are you trying to set me up with her again?”
Verda glanced at Xander and then said to Orion, “It’s okay, I can manage on my own.”
She stood up, “It’s not as deserted here, there are people around, I’ll be fine.”
By saying this, Verda inadvertently made Xander look stingy.
He said, “Let me just take you.”
Verda responded, “But you’ve been drinking, how are you going to drive?”
“I’ll call a driver.”
Xander said.
Verda replied, “I might as well just take a taxi directly, so you don’t have to go out of your way.”
“I have to call a driver anyway; it’s just convenience that I can drop you off on the way.”
“Just a girl like you, going back alone, in case something happens, it will appear that we did not plan well, so let Xander take you.”
Verda nodded, “Alright.”
Given how far things had progressed, it would be inappropriate for her to refuse again.
As they left the restaurant, Verda got into Xander’s car.
Xander started the car and said to everyone, “I should head off?”
Orion waved him off.
“How about going to my place?” Luna suggested.
It was still early, and going back home would mean no sleep, so Luna’s suggestion was a good idea.
Freya added, “Just right, let’s go stargazing.”
Kai held her hand, “Mom, I want to stargaze too.”
Sacha patted her head and smiled without saying a word.
“Let’s go.”
Their driver also arrived.
They all got in the car and headed to Orion’s house.
…
Xander drove without speaking. He was so aloof that Verda could not be bothered to initiate any conversation.
She crossed her arms, closed her eyes, and pretended to sleep.
She was indeed exhausted, having had a full day of fun, she was now very tired.
Xander glanced at her and asked, “Are you tired?”
She kept her eyes closed and replied, “Mm.”
“Don’t fall asleep, we’re almost at your house.” Xander reminded her.
Verda opened her eyes and turned to him, “What? Do you think I’ll stay in the car and not get out?”
Xander was surprised, “Why would you think that?”
He definitely did not have that intention; he only thought that if she fell asleep, waking her up later might make her uncomfortable.
It might be better for her to sleep once they got home, where a wake-up call wouldn’t be necessary, and she could sleep well.
Verda raised the corner of her lips, “Your friends, seeing you single, are all trying to set me up with you, but you always avoid it, as if I were a threat to you. Don’t worry, I don’t like to make things difficult for people.”
Xander laughed, “I am aware of that.”
Verda rolled her eyes.
“What’s wrong?” Xander asked her, “What’s with the eye roll?”
“Don’t act like you’ve never seen the world, I won’t bite, there’s no need to be on guard against me.”
“Who’s on guard against you? I’m just keeping my distance from you because we’re not on the same page. They keep trying to set us up, and I’m afraid you’ll be uncomfortable.”
“Self-righteous,” Verda muttered.
“So, are you saying I don’t have to keep my distance from you? You won’t find me annoying?” Xander asked with a smile.
Verda said, “I’m already annoyed with you.”
Xander stopped the car, “You don’t have to be annoyed now, we’ve reached home, you can get out.”
Verda pushed open the car door, and as she got out, she looked back at him, “Do you know why you don’t have a girlfriend?”
Xander asked with interest, “Why?”
“No woman likes a stingy man like you; you’re too stingy.”
With that, she got out of the car and said, “Be careful on the road.”
With a smile on her face, she walked quickly towards the house.
Verda’s parents were sitting on the sofa, with a three-tiered cake on the table.
When they saw their daughter enter, they both looked at her.
Verda immediately put on a pleasant smile, “Mom, Dad, you’re still awake?”
“Today is your birthday, and you didn’t come back to eat with us, where did you go? If you don’t explain today, just leave, don’t bother coming home.”
Verda sat on the sofa, clinging to her father’s arm, “Dad, I went on a blind date.”
“Is it the one introduced by Tianji? How was it?” Before Verda could reply, her father said, “You must have scared the person away again. Verda, you can’t continue like this, you can have fun, but you must find someone to settle down with, your mother and I, can we live to be a thousand or ten thousand years old? How long can we stay with you?”
“I know, this time I didn’t scare him away, so rest assured.”
Verda knew that she was the only child in the family. She didn’t just want a husband; she needed someone who could look after Verda’s family’s business in the future.
“Really?” Her father didn’t believe her, “It’s you, are you trying to deceive me again?”
“Really, he just dropped me off.” Verda shook her father’s arm, “Let’s have some cake.”
She picked up the cake knife on the table and cut the cake.
Her mother looked at her daughter, “You don’t have to deceive us, if it doesn’t work out, just find someone ordinary, as long as you like him, that’s all that matters. You must understand, you’re not interested in a career, you have to find someone who can take care of things for you. Your father’s health hasn’t been good these past few years, and you’re not young anymore, you need to be more responsible.”
“I know, really, I know.” Verda put the cut cake in her mother’s hands, “Mom, I will think about you guys.”
“Think about us, just find a reliable person to marry, so we can rest assured.” Her father said.
“I’ve really found someone, if you don’t believe me, ask my cousin.” Verda said confidently.
