CHAPTER 72

Chapter 72 I’m on Your Side

I took the phone and could almost immediately tell that this was my design.

Moreover, it was the one from my drafts with a few details that hadn’t been perfected yet, but someone copied it.

Despite that, the realization that my design had ended up in Evelyn’s hands left chills all over me.

“Don’t be too anxious.”

Cecil reassured me gently, “I’ll hold off on this matter until you figure out how to prove that this is your design.” Content bel0ngs to Nôvel(D)r/a/ma.Org.

“No need to.”

I brushed my hair behind my ear and smiled, “Let it ferment; the stronger, the better.”

I hadn’t thought before that Evelyn wanted so much from me.

Since she’s challenging me proactively, I didn’t mind giving her a lesson.

Cecil’s eyes were clear as he smiled slightly. “I was worried you wouldn’t be able to handle it after these consecutive incidents, but it seems like you’ve already figured out a solution?”

I nodded, “Back in college, our teachers used to say that in this field, you must always have the ability to prove your skills in order to protect your designs.”

Cecil’s eyes were filled with smiles, “Three years have passed, and you’ve become even more excellent at protecting yourself.”

I smiled in confusion. “Cecil, how are you so sure this design is mine and not that I copied Evelyn?”

“The Hope I know wouldn’t stoop to plagiarism.”

He sounded very confident and lightly joked, “And do you know what it means to help those close to you rather than outsiders?”

I asked, “What?”

“It means we’re friends.”

He teased, half–jokingly, “Whatever you do, I’m on your side.”

I couldn’t help but smile, “Do you always stand by every friend like this?”

“Yes.” He raised an eyebrow noncommittally, a meaningful look on his face. “However, I don’t have many friends.”

What he said was true. Over the years I’ve known him, although he was in Ivan’s social class, he seemed closer to Ivan and Christopher.

And now, I felt there was a growing distance between him and Christopher.

His frequent friends seemed to have dwindled down to just me and Ivan.

I comforted him, “I have very few friends, too; I don’t interact much with others apart from you and Elissa.”

“That’s fine.”

He smiled, his eyes like captivating peach blossoms; his eyelashes resembled raven feathers as they slightly lowered, concealing some thoughtful emotions.

When I picked up the hot drink to warm my hands, Cecil’s phone suddenly rang. He gave me an apologetic look, “I need to take this call.”

He walked out with his phone, answering as he went.

I checked the time and decided to leave as well, waving to him from a distance before walking away.

However, I saw his face turn cold and serious; speaking on the phone without a hint of warmth or softness.

From this distance, I couldn’t hear what he was saying.

Suddenly, he seemed to notice my gaze. He looked up, the coldness in his eyes instantly fading. He strode toward me, “I get it, that’s all for now.”

After hanging up, he gestured toward my car, “Ready to go?”

I thought he must have encountered some troubling matter at work, nodding, “Yes, I have some things to deal with, and you should, head to work as well.

He replied, “Alright. Do you need any help with the plagiarism issue?”

“I might.”

I chuckled, “Evelyn definitely won’t let this go easily. I wonder if both her and I can go to MS Group tomorrow? I’ll prove that this design is mine and give your company an explanation.”

He asked with a smile, “Do you want to keep it low–key or make a big deal out of it?”

“Let’s make a big deal out of it.”

I replied without hesitation.

“Leave it to me.”

Cecil nodded, seeing me off to the car. “Stay safe; call me if you need anything.”

His voice was clear and gentle, with a kind of magical calming power.

I drove out of the parking lot. As I stopped to pay, I saw him still standing there from my rearview mirror. He was tall

and elegant, his gaze seemingly following the direction I left in.

If I didn’t know he had been admiring a woman for so many years, I would have suspected he had a crush on me..

I drove smoothly toward Valence Group, calling Connie on the way.

“In ten minutes, I’ll be waiting for you in the underground parking lot.” I said.

“Hope.” Connie seemed a bit surprised, “1–I’m really busy right now.”

I spoke coldly, “Should I come up to find you then?”

She answered, “Let me come down instead.”

Initially, I held some hope that it wasn’t her. Perhaps I had overlooked something else.

However, her guilt was too obvious.

When I arrived, she was waiting for me in my usual parking spot, her face slightly pale.

After getting out of the car, I went straight to the point and asked, “Why do you do this?”

I couldn’t understand. Honestly, I considered myself a decent boss who helped wherever I could, even turning a blind eye to minor issues.

“What?” Connie’s eyes avoided mine, asking uncomfortably.

I pursed my lips. “Are you forcing me to expose and debunk you?”

“Hope!” She lowered her head in embarrassment.

I furrowed my brows slightly, “You said you needed to ventilate the office, but you actually went to take pictures of my manuscript?”

Apart from this, I couldn’t think of any other oversight.

Connie had been with me since her college internship, and I personally interviewed her. She was the person I trusted the most in the entire Valence Group.

Unreliability wasn’t just limited to marriage and men.

Connie fell silent for a moment, and I understood. “You don’t like Evelyn, so what did she promise you? A promotion or a raise?”

“Neither.”

She suddenly looked up, slight madness in her eyes. “She said she’d take me to meet my idol. Although they aren’t close, she’s willing to introduce the.”

I couldn’t believe it, exclaiming, “Just because of that?”

Chapter 72 I’m on Your Side

I knew she admired Cecil before, but I didn’t realize it had reached this level of obsession.

“I like him; I’ve liked him for a long time!”

She was agitated, looking at me resentfully. “You know I like him, yet you not only keep it from me that you’re close with him, but you even went to concerts with him. You never thought about introducing me to him!”

“Connie,” I furrowed my eyebrows, speaking coldly, “Let’s not mention that I had already talked to him about. introducing you two. Even if I hadn’t done so, you have no right to blame me. He’s my friend, whether I want to introduce you or not depends on me; I don’t owe you anything!”

“It is the design drafts that will be representing Valence Group to obtain the project. Commercial theft is a serious accusation, so think about what you should do!”

After saying that, I got into the car and prepared to leave.

Connie

unexpectedly chuckled, “As your assistant for these years, I’ll kindly advise you to think about how you can survive in the design industry in the future.”

“What do you mean I can’t survive?”

I rolled down the car window and showed her the recording on my phone, “Connie, I’ll never show mercy if we’re on opposing sides.“–
