Chapter 72
Chapter 72
Back at the Moore residence, breakfast was served on the dining table.
Jeffrey hadn't had a good night's sleep the past few days. He kept waking up at the slightest bit of movement. Cayden never failed to create a commotion whenever he pulled into the garage.
He was fast on his foot and faster in a car. As such, it was hard for Jeffrey to ignore him.
However, that was where the problem lay. A hard-working workaholic who only had his eyes on the company's benefit suddenly stopped working overtime at the office and didn't return home recently, so where was he from evening till night?
Especially so last night. He came back even later than usual.
Jeffrey had secretly asked Zachary and had gotten a shocking piece of information from him.
“Great-grandpa, Daddy couldn't sleep and would be tossing and turning even if he came back. Uncle Kendrick said it was a symptom of sleeping alone. It's a physiological illness men get at a certain stage of their lives. Even though I don't understand it, I think it isn't good for Daddy if he continues to lose sleep,” said Zachary with concern for his father's health as he scratched his head.
Jeffrey patted Zachary's head gently and said, “Your dad is healthy, so he'll have a long life ahead of him. I'm not worried about that. I'm just concerned about—”
However, Jeffrey didn't finish his sentence.
Jeffrey's expression became serious when he turned to Cayden. “Cayden, I heard you came back at
midnight again yesterday.”
Cayden had only taken a sip of his freshly brewed coffee when Jeffrey popped the question. His indifferent face turned stony as he got up from his seat. One of the household staff quickly handed him his freshly-ironed blazer.
Cayden said as he buttoned his blazer, “I'm leaving for the office. Enjoy your breakfast.”
Jeffrey's brows furrowed, and his hand holding the cane trembled at Cayden's rude attitude. My capable grandson has been celibate for years. His only routine is traveling between his house and office. His life is so monotonous that he's like a retired old man.
I even thought of drugging him, tying him up, and bringing him to consult an andrologist. However, it seems he has good news for me before I resort to desperate measures.
Kendrick had tried to follow him for a few days but kept getting caught by Cayden due to his terrible driving skills and stupidity. In the end, he could only drive back dejectedly every time.
I don't understand why Cayden won't bring his girlfriend back to meet his family if he's officially dating. I finally got to have breakfast with him and took the opportunity to ask the burning question, yet he merely got up silently and left for the office. It feels like he's avoiding the topic the more I think about it.
Does the girl have a problematic family background? How bad is it that Cayden can't even bring her over? Or is he just a cold and unfeeling man? Is he fooling around with her and planning to dump her after a few days? Does he have no intention to marry the girl? Unfilial grandson! A ruthless man is no real man!
“Hurry up and finish eating so you can send me to the company to find your brother,” Jeffrey barked at Kendrick.
The latter, who was shoving food into his mouth, was baffled by the sudden order.
What did I do?
Meanwhile, Zachary and Rory exchanged glances, staying silent as they chewed the donuts in their mouths. They didn't dare to reveal that their father liked Avery.
Lily had finished her breakfast too. “Dad, forgive me for being straightforward, but you knew your son better than anyone else when he was still alive. Cayden is your grandson, and he has the Moore family blood flowing in him, so I'm sure he has inherited his father's womanizing ways. He might be spending his nights with some vixen from some nightclub.”
“Mom!” Kendrick frowned.
Instantly, the room fell silent.
Allie set her cutlery down. “I'm full. Please excuse me. I'll be heading to my room now.”
Meanwhile, the kids were wondering what a vixen was. Is a vixen an angel? She must be pretty then.
Everyone in the room knew what Lily was getting at.
Cayden and Kendrick's father, Bruce, was a womanizer before he passed away. He didn't turn over a
new leaf even after marrying Lily. Instead, he became more brazen.
Bruce had warned Lily to ignore his affairs with other women and just focus on her role as the mistress of the Moore family.
However, how could she have gotten pregnant with him not being home most of the time during the first two years after she married into the Moore family?
Lily, running out of patience, finally snapped and decided to catch Bruce in the act. With that, she made a detailed plan, swearing to teach his mistress a lesson she would never forget.
It was midnight that day when she caught Bruce red-handed. The mistress was Allie, who was sitting at their dining table with them now.
Allie came from an average household, so her background was only considered acceptable at that time. However, after sinking her claws into the Moore family, she slowly elevated her family's status, pulling the Musk family to where they are now.
Back then, Allie had only hung out with wealthy friends and even expended all her efforts to get acquainted with elites from families with political backgrounds.
Lily remembered that Allie had a best friend when she was younger—Claire Walsh. Allie started spending more time with Claire after the latter began dating a soldier from a prominent family. Even then, Allie had been busy searching for a back-burner guy in case she couldn't get her hands on Bruce.
This woman has been cunning since she was young. She worked at nightclubs, putting on innocent and pitiful acts to get men falling all over her. In the end, she even managed to take my place as
Bruce's wife, allowing her son to be the heir.
Despite that, she was well aware that a jerk like Bruce would never date any woman seriously.
The only thing the successful man cared about was having a successor. Any woman who delivered a son for him would please him significantly. Hence, Allie started her lavish life in a wealthy family after bearing Bruce a son.
Despite causing a fuss over the unfairness of it, Lily gave up in the end. Well, there's nothing I can do about it when Allie has such a capable son. An illegitimate child who managed to pull Moore Group back on track from the verge of bankruptcy and changed its name to Trident Group. His act completely erased the older generations' great achievements and turned the company into his own empire. Nôvel(D)rama.Org's content.
Maybe this is God's punishment for all the sins I've committed. On second thought, if I killed off Cayden back then, I wouldn't have to bear this punishment now.
Meanwhile, Jeffrey had arrived at the office on the top floor of Trident Group. Catching a glimpse of the busy Cayden, Jeffrey pointed at him with his cane and admonished, “No one can tarnish the Moore family's name. You knew about the despicable acts your father did when he was alive. I forbid you from following his footsteps.”
“What have I done, Grandpa?” Cayden stood up and pushed away the cane that was inches from his face.
Jeffrey's eyes widened in anger. “You're asking me what you've done? How dare you ask me! You should know what I'm talking about!”
Kendrick explained, “Grandpa suspects you've been busy with a woman since you've only been coming home before dawn lately, and the only women you can find after midnight are those selling themselves on the streets.”
Cayden didn't know how to react to their baseless theory.
“Bring her home to meet us if she's not who we think she is,” Jeffrey demanded.
