PHB 25
“Sir, my audit team and I have checked multiple times. Arinda, Mr. Daniel’s wife, doesn’t have any foreign accounts or suspected involvement in money laundering or anything of the sort. The investigation has been thorough. I can assure you we won’t be wrong.”
In the office space in his home, Lucas received a report from Felix. One task had been successfully completed by his assistant. Now, it was up to him to slowly investigate Deasy. Whether his boss had foreign accounts suspected to be where Daniel had hidden the company’s money.
“So, we can remove her from the list.”
“Yes, Sir. Now it’s just Ms. Deasy. For her, I leave it entirely to you, Mr. Lucas.”
Lucas nodded his head and reached for the documents that Felix had provided earlier, reading them once more.
“At first glance, Deasy’s documents are clean, white, like Eid clothes. There’s no stain.”
“But, it doesn’t rule out the possibility that she received illicit funds from Mr. Daniel, right?”
Lucas nodded.NôvelDrama.Org holds text © rights.
“Yeah, all those possibilities are there,” he continued to examine what he held in his hand, reading it slowly while responding to his assistant. “But when you think about it, Deasy is originally wealthy. It’s unlikely that she’d accept dirty money like this, willingly putting herself in such a mess. Besides, 10 billion is a small amount. I believe her personal savings would be more than that, without needing money from Daniel.”
“That makes sense, sir,” Felix agreed. “However, nothing’s impossible. Maybe Mr. Daniel just entrusted it.”
Lucas frowned instantly.
“That would be really idle of him to entrust it to Deasy. If she’s valuable, they wouldn’t part ways, right?”
Felix nodded again.
“So, are you planning to continue the investigation, Mr. Lucas?”
“Of course, I’ll keep investigating. The outcome of this Deasy investigation will determine whether Daniel is truly harming the company or not.”
Felix nodded once more and then said something that got Lucas thinking.
“I think there’s a fast way to investigate all this, sir.”
“What is it?”
“Deasy’s laptop. I don’t know why, but I have a feeling that all the answers we’ve been looking for are right there.”
Lucas snapped his fingers, as if he had just come up with a brilliant idea he had never considered before.
“That’s true. Why didn’t I think of that before?”
“But it’s not easy for us to take or borrow her personal belongings like that. Especially her laptop. We can’t just steal it; that would be a criminal act.”
Lucas nodded. What Felix said was indeed true. He needed to figure out how to borrow Deasy’s laptop, at least for an hour to transfer all the documents stored on it.
“I’ll think about how to do it. We have to be careful so that Deasy doesn’t get suspicious.”
Lucas then glanced at the watch on his wrist. A moment later, he got up, grabbed his car keys, and prepared to leave.
“Where are you going, Mr. Lucas?” Felix wondered. It wasn’t usual for his boss to leave without his supervision.
“I’m going to Deasy’s apartment. There’s something that needs to be discussed and resolved quickly regarding her pregnancy and the baby in her belly.”
“Is Mr. Lucas planning to marry Ms. Deasy?”
Lucas shrugged. Up to this point, he was even confused about what actions to take to avoid causing harm to both parties.
“To be honest, whether I get married or not doesn’t matter. What’s important is that the baby in Deasy’s womb is born safely without any complications. I’ll do my best to ensure that Deasy doesn’t do anything foolish like getting an abortion.”
“If you do end up getting married eventually, Mr. Lucas, will you reveal your true identity to Ms. Deasy?”
Lucas shook his head.
“According to the initial plan, I won’t reveal my identity until the task my father gave me is truly completed. We’ll see how things go in the future. I can’t say much right now.”
Lucas then left. As promised, he hurried to Deasy’s apartment and arrived exactly at eight o’clock in the evening. After knocking on the door for a moment, Deasy opened the door.
“Come in,” Deasy said.
Lucas quickly entered, following her lead, and then sat on the available sofa in the living room.
“Let’s get straight to the point. I don’t like beating around the bush or wasting time.”
Deasy initiated the conversation, wasting no time and going straight to the core of the discussion.
“Regardless of how things may turn out, I don’t want to marry you. Whatever you want to do in the future, whether it’s acting caring, protective, delivering food every day, and so on, I don’t care, and I won’t object. But please, don’t force me to marry you.”
Lucas nodded, acknowledging Deasy’s firm decision. It seemed pointless to argue.
“Sure, it’s up to you. Once again, I won’t be at a disadvantage if you don’t want me to take responsibility by marrying you officially. Anyway, if your belly grows and someone asks who your husband is, you’ll have to deal with that yourself.”
Deasy grumbled in frustration. Why was her life so complicated? What sins had she committed in her past life to bear such a heavy burden?
“I can hire another man to be my pretend husband,” Deasy replied casually.
“Why waste money hiring a fake husband, ma’am, when there’s a free one available? If you don’t want to be my wife permanently, we can have a temporary marriage, a contract marriage, a secret marriage, or whatever you want to call it.”
“What do you mean?”
“Like in those drama movies. We can get married temporarily until the baby in your belly is born. The important thing is that the baby has an official status. After it’s born and we get a divorce, you can go back to your normal life as usual.”
“So, I’d be a widow then?”
Lucas raised an eyebrow. “Well, it’s pretty much the same. I’d end up being a widower, too, ma’am.”
“Widower?”
This time, Lucas nodded.
“Yes, a cool widower.”
Deasy felt like vomiting. When it came to confidence, Lucas seemed unbeatable.
“Don’t exaggerate. Besides, whether it’s a temporary marriage, a contract marriage, or whatever, I’d still have to acknowledge you as my husband. What will people say if I get married and impregnated by my own subordinate? It’s you we’re talking about. It would seriously damage my reputation.”
Lucas sighed heavily. Deasy was clearly underestimating him. If only the woman in front of him knew how handsome and wealthy he was, she wouldn’t insult him like this.
“What else can I say? That’s the reality of it. Plus, we’re both single. Why not just get married? It would make things a lot easier.”
Lucas stared intently at Deasy, suppressing a mischievous grin, and said once more, “An empty barrel makes the most noise. Your heart is emptier than that barrel; I’d be a better fit.”
Deasy wanted to cry. Why, at such a serious moment, was Lucas throwing absurd rhymes and jokes?
“No, this can’t be.”
This couldn’t be allowed to continue.
“Two, three stingrays. You’re not handsome, that’s why I don’t want to own you.”
“Four times four equals sixteen. Sooner or later, I’ll make sure my heart you win.”
Deasy then glared at Lucas, signaling him to stop this utterly pointless banter.
“Stop, okay? This isn’t a comedy show. Stop with the rhyming!”
“Well, you seem really tense.”
“Listen… do you think I’d marry your father?”
“Rather than me calling you ‘darling’? Which one would you prefer?”
“ARGHHH!!!”
Deasy growled in frustration. She wanted to curse, but she remembered that she couldn’t waste her energy like that.
“Let’s get back to the original topic. If you keep babbling rhymes, you might as well go home.”
Lucas chuckled. Holding his cramping stomach, he slowly tried to steer the conversation back to the initial topic.
“Continuing from our previous conversation, I think it’s better for you to have a husband while pregnant than not having one, right? Just temporary, though. After our child is born, we can get a divorce. You don’t need to worry or be afraid of any trouble. Once the baby is born, I’ll take care of it and cover all the expenses 100% without needing any assistance from you, Ms. Deasy.”
Deasy seemed to ponder, thinking hard about the decision she should make.
“So, what do you say?”
“I’m sticking with my initial decision not to marry you. Besides, you’re not my type, Luc. I don’t like nerdy guys, especially homebodies like you.”
“Wow, that’s harsh. Are you really not into homebodies?”
Deasy nodded repeatedly.
“Yes, absolutely.”
“Okay. I’ll pray that someday Ms. Deasy will find her soulmate among homeless people since she’s rejected a homebody like me.”
“Lucas!”
“Also, I’ll pray that Ms. Deasy will forever be head over heels in love with me.”
Deasy grimaced. Lucas was being so annoying with his prayers.
“Don’t dream too much! That’s not going to happen, Luc.”
Deasy then got up. Feeling that there was nothing more to discuss, she intended to hurry Lucas out.
“Is it all settled then? Go home quickly. I want to rest.”
Lucas didn’t object or protest. Considering that Deasy was pregnant and needed rest, he prepared to leave.
“In that case, I’ll head home.”
Deasy simply nodded. She then escorted Lucas to the front door of her apartment unit.
However, just as Lucas was about to leave, Deasy appeared dizzy. A moment later, she lost consciousness and ended up fainting.
