Chapter 0533
Chapter 0533
Candice paused. "He's discharged from the hospital after recovering. What's the big deal?"
"You're right, but Sieg said he shouldn't have been discharged now. His condition isn't stable yet; it was his own insistence."
Yana spoke as she looked at Candice.
She felt a sigh in her heart. She didn't expect Alex to end up like this.
Since Alex had sent Daniel to court for Candice's sake, his reputation in the circle had been polarized.
Although the older generation all said Alex was heartless, the younger generation thought Alex was quite remarkable.
He had courage, and he was devoted.
Although more people were just spectators, there were still quite a few who envied Candice.
Despite all that, Candice seemed indifferent. She packed her and Ellis's luggage then turned to Yana and said, "It seems I won't be able to attend your promotion celebration dinner. So, congratulations in advance."
Yana changed the subject, feeling emotional. "Well, there's nothing we can do. We'll have to wait until next year to get together."
"Oh, by the way, isn't Hanley going back to Dorrington City next month? I thought you two might meet, but it turns out you missed each other."
Candice said, "I'm just going abroad; it's not like we won't see each other. He'll come overseas later, and I'll invite him to dinner then."
Yana winked at her. "So, when will you and Hanley get together?"
Candice was stunned. She hadn't been in a good mood lately and hadn't contacted Hanley much.
Seeing her not answering, Yana furrowed her brows and asked again, "What's with that expression? Did you two have a fight?"
Candice shook her head. "No."
"You scared me. I thought you two had a fight." Content from NôvelDr(a)ma.Org.
She lowered her gaze to her phone screen and didn't respond further to Yana's words.
The day she left Dorrington City, her flight was at 7:30 in the morning, but by the time she arrived back home, it was still daytime.
The housekeeper had been waiting for her. Candice handed Ellis to her and went to freshen up.
Long flights were uncomfortable, especially with such a large time difference.
But even lying in bed, Candice couldn't fall asleep no matter how hard she tried.
During her absence, work had piled up. She had been leaving early and returning late, almost spending every day at the office.
The tasks on Darius's side were heavy, and Candice had to report some work to him regularly, knowing she was still in Dorrington City.
"Alex mentioned cooperation with me recently. What do you think?" Darius asked leisurely.
Candice could tell from his tone that he had already made up his mind about everything. She said, "If you think it's okay, then it's okay."
Darius chuckled. "I thought you would be unhappy, so I wanted to ask your opinion."
Candice asked, "What if I disagree?"
Darius raised an eyebrow. "That's your business."
The implication was that whether she agreed or not, he didn't care. He was just asking for the sake of appearances.
Candice lowered her eyelashes and said expressionlessly, "It's up to you."
Darius glanced at her meaningfully. "Then be prepared."
He didn't specify what preparation he meant, and Candice didn't ask. If it was really important, Darius would have instructed her.
It was the weekend today, and she was busy taking Ellis to the hospital for vaccination.
Ellis was growing fast, and there seemed to be changes in her appearance recently. The nanny would take her to the nearby park to play every afternoon.
When she went over, Ellis was holding a small dog and not letting go. Seeing Candice coming, the nanny said, "Ellis really likes this dog. The owner said it has been vaccinated and won't hurt her."
Candice didn't mind Ellis liking the dog. She glanced at Ellis's dirty clothes and felt a bit helpless. Then, she picked her up and said, "Let's go home and change clothes. We'll get vaccinated later."
Ellis blinked her eyes, not understanding anything.
When Candice was busy, Yana told her that Alex had firmly established himself at Aether Corporation.
She said, "So, in the end, Oscar, a bastard child, has nothing. How could he possibly compete with Alex?"
"Alex has the support of the Sui family behind him, and he's also signed a cooperation agreement with the Quimby family in Solaris. Moreover, the members of the board are all opportunists. As soon as they saw that the situation wasn't favorable, they abandoned Oscar."
"Oscar is in a difficult situation now. When Alex suppressed him, he didn't hold back. I heard from my friend that he resigned from Aether Corporation a few days ago. Anyway, it looks quite bleak."
Candice knew all about these things. When she communicated with Darius about work before, he would mention them in passing.
She also asked Darius why he collaborated with Alex. Darius said, "Isn't doing business for the sake of profit?"
But as for how much benefit Alex gave Darius to secure his foothold, she didn't ask.
After work, Candice packed up and went home. She didn't have much work today, so she rarely got home early.
However, when she got home, Ellis and the nanny hadn't returned yet. Candice didn't think much of it, assuming that the weather was nice today, so Ellis wanted to play outside a little longer.
It was almost dinner time when Ellis and the nanny finally returned. The little girl reached out her hand eagerly for Candice to hold her, looking extremely happy.
Candice asked, "Why are you so happy today?"
Ellis babbled and couldn't explain clearly. Candice looked at the nanny, who paused and explained, "The weather was nice today, and there were many other children in the park."
Candice said, "But you shouldn't play too late. You need to come home before dinner."
The nanny nodded repeatedly, but the next night, they still came back a bit late.
Candice felt displeased. She called the nanny aside, and after hesitating for a while, the nanny looked at her for a long time before explaining the reason.
The day after she finished work in the afternoon, she didn't go home but went directly to the nearby park.
She could already hear Ellis's laughter before she arrived.
Candice stood there motionless, watching as Ellis walked unsteadily across the lawn, with a young tall man guarding her in front.
Finally, Ellis seemed to step on something, and she sat down abruptly. Her mouth flattened as if she was about to cry. Then, the next moment, she was lifted up by someone. Her mouth, which had been frowning, turned upward into a smile, and she became happy again.
Alex held Ellis, his lips also curved into a smile.
Then, he saw Candice.
The smile on his lips froze, and he slowly put Ellis down. Like a child who had done something wrong, he looked at Candice with unease and nervousness.
Candice glanced at him, said nothing, walked up, and lifted Ellis, whispering, "Let's go home with Mommy."
Footsteps followed behind her, and Alex's voice was low, "I didn't deliberately not tell you I was coming. I was just afraid you'd be unhappy to see me."
Candice stopped. "Why did you come if you knew I'd be unhappy?"
He fell silent and looked at her. "I didn't mean to make you unhappy. It's just... I haven't seen you in so long."
