Mission: From Divorcee to Millionaire

Chapter 165

As they chatted, his hand had already started to wander up her thigh in that all-too-familiar way.

Selena was having none of it. Already in a foul mood, she wasn't about to play along. She quickly shoved his hand away and sat up with a huff. "Everett, do you always have to think with your hormones?" she snapped. He propped his head on his hand, giving her a sidelong glance with those dark eyes of his. "Oh, so you're back with us now?"

Feigning a sarcastic tone, he added, "You've been wearing that grumpy face all night, and it's really not doing my mood any favors."

Selena blinked in surprise. It dawned on her that he'd noticed her being lost in thought and had deliberately provoked her to snap her out of it.

Everett's deep, captivating voice sounded again, "Still brooding over your aunt's antics?"

Selena just sighed. She had to admit that even though Everett was a mess when it came to their marriage, in every other way, he was exceptional. He had a knack for reading people, making her feel like an open book around him.

Falling for him wasn't something she could help; she admired strength, and a man as striking and talented as him being her husband was hardly something she could resist. Everett was the kind of guy people naturally gravitated towards. If he actually loved her, she'd be completely ensnared in this complicated relationship for sure.

Biting her lip, Selena hesitated before finally asking, "What are you planning to do about my aunt and her crowd?"

Everett's expression turned icy, and instead of answering, he countered with, "They plotted against me and messed with you. What do you think I should do?"

The message was clear: he intended to make sure they faced the music, and it wouldn't be pretty.

Selena expected this, but hearing it

still made her heart tighten. She wasn't worried about Claire. Since Claire let Lydia and her crew get away with harassing her, Selena had no sympathy left for her. But... Claire was her uncle's wife and Ricky's

mom. Brook and Ricky had always treated her like family.

Struggling a bit, she said, "Aunt Claire's been harsh to me, but Uncle Brook's always been kind. Ricky has also always looked out for me like a sister... I-”

Before she could finish, Everett cut

in, "Selena, showing mercy to your enemies is just hurting yourself. You've let Claire slide too many times, and she's only gotten bolder. Letting her off the hook again won't her gratitude; she'll just push it further!"

Selena understood the logic; she just didn't want to deal with the fallout. She worried about putting her uncle in a tough spot. Back when her uncle was struggling, Claire stood by him She never left through failed businesses and even supported him with her savings. So once Brook made it, he treated Claire like royalty. Except for the time he adopted Selena against Claire's wishes, he always pampered his wife and tried to smooth things over between them, though it never really worked.

If Claire ended up facing serious consequences this time, her uncle would be beside himself with worry.

Everett's long fingers gently but firmly lifted her chin, making it clear, "Selena, this isn't your burden to bear. I'm going to see this through, and not even you can change that." Selena's dark eyes locked onto his, a flicker of emotion dancing in them.

She wasn't naive; she picked up on the undertone of his words. He was taking the heat so her uncle wouldn't blame her for any fallout.
