Loving My Brother’s Best Friend

74• Remorse

Because of the helmet, Cole was saved when he fell off his bike. He immediately took off the helmet with his bleeding hands, his eyes searched for his kiddo, and he struggled to get to his feet because his legs were gravely hurt.

His breath stuck in his throat as he saw her lying in the pool of blood. He immediately stood up and dashed towards her, shedding tears.

Her head was badly injured and severely bleeding. When he saw her like this, his heart stopped beating and he went completely numb. His body was shaking, and tears were falling from his eyes like a drain, and then the rain began to pour on them as if God was crying along with him. He sagged down beside her and placed her bleeding head on his lap with his trembling hands.

He was bleeding as well, but his pain paled in comparison to hers. She was unconscious, and he was terrified of losing her, so his entire body was shuddering in fear.

“I’m sorry, please wake up.” He cried miserably, hugging her near to his chest. He was fucking afraid of losing his life.

Her name was engraved on every breath he took. If she stopped breathing, he would too.

‘No, I can’t fall weak. I have to call an ambulance. She’ll be fine.’ He braced himself and quickly pulled out his phone from his jeans pocket, but his phone’s network was down.

“Fuck! Please somebody help.” He embraced her as he screamed helplessly before getting to his feet and running to the road to solicit help while carrying his unconscious kiddo in his arms.

It was late at night, and there were no vehicles on the road. The mere thought of losing her caused his legs to shake violently.

“Kiddo, I won’t let anything bad happen to you.” His tears fell directly onto her face as he stared at her; the blood, tears, and raindrops all mixed together. It felt like a nightmare to him, and all he wanted to do was wake up, but it was worse than a nightmare; it was fucking reality. It was killing him deep down because his life was in the worst condition in his arms solely because of him.

“I’m sorry, love. I’m sorry.” His lips quivered, and he whimpered in agony, engulfing her in his arms.

When he saw a car approaching, he hurried and stood in the middle of the road to stop it, but the car passed him from the other side. He yelled, “Fuck!” God didn’t seem to be with him today, as if he was punishing him for unnecessarily yelling at his kiddo.

While wailing and holding his lifeline in his arms, he was pleading with God not to take her away. For the first time in his life, he felt completely vulnerable.NôvelDrama.Org © content.

Then everything in front of him blurred, and he felt weak on his knees. At last, his legs gave up and he collapsed on the road, but he didn’t let go of her because he wanted to protect her at all costs. He tried to keep his eyes open, but his body eventually gave up and he became unconscious in the middle of the road, still clutching her tightly in his arms; she was lying on his chest.

The rain poured down on them as they lay lifeless in the middle of the road.

Finally, one car came to a halt, and a man got out, and he drove them to the hospital.

Cole woke up on the hospital bed, screaming, “Reyna…” His heart pounded as the flashes of his kiddo lying in the pool of blood came into his mind. He moved his hand to his side, thinking it was his nightmare, but when he realised it was his fucking reality, he panicked.

Ethan and James rushed into his room, listening to his shout. He sat up and harshly pulled out all the needles which were attached to his hands.

He was about to climb down from the bed when Ethan stopped him by holding his shoulders. “Cole, you need rest, you’re injured.”

“I’m fine. I just want to meet my Kiddo. How is she?” He inquired, extremely anxious for her. As Ethan dejectedly closed his eyes, he felt as if his heart stopped beating because thousands of bad thoughts occupied his mind in that mere second.

“Her condition is critical.” As Ethan told him, tears trickled down his cheeks mechanically. “Doc-Doctors are trying their best.” Ethan’s lips were quivering because he was in extreme pain as his sister was fighting against death. The fear of losing his most precious person and the little bundle of joy was killing him.

“I want to meet her, Ethan. Please take me to her.” Cole begged, crying fretfully.

James was also shedding silent tears and praying to God to give back his daughter and his son’s happiness.

Ethan nodded because he knew Cole wouldn’t lie down in peace here when the love of his life was fighting for her life somewhere else.

Ethan and James led him out of his room by giving him support. His leg was badly injured, but he wasn’t feeling any pain because at that time he could only think about his kiddo. He couldn’t imagine his life without her.

Ethan opened the door to Reyna’s room without looking inside because he couldn’t bear seeing his little sister in that state because it shattered his heart.

When Cole saw her in the worst condition, his heart skipped beating and he stumbled. Many wires were attached to her hands, an oxygen mask was placed over her mouth, her head was completely wrapped in a white roller bandage, and her hands and legs were also bandaged. It was torture for him to see her like that.

After seeing her like this, every cell in his body was dying; he went completely numb at that point. With trembling legs, he lumbered towards his kiddo, who was unconscious and fighting for her life.

He stood beside her and bent over her. His lips trembled in pain, tears streamed down his cheeks, and he stroked her hair with his trembling hand as he whispered in her ear in a sorrowful, guilty tone. “Because of me, you’re fighting for your life. I’m sorry, kiddo.”

He had no words to say right now except sorry, so he touched his forehead to hers and held her hand. Every breath he was taking saying sorry to her, and tears were streaming down his eyes, landing directly on her face, as if she, too, was crying with him.

“You have to wake up for me, love. You know I’m nothing without you. Please, wake up.” He begged, clasping her face and crying.

The doctor stepped inside and said, “You can’t stay here with the patient. You have to go out.”

“I’m not going to leave her side until she wakes up.” Cole refused sternly, his moist eyes fixed on his kiddo.

“Try to understand. It’s for patient betterment, you have to leave.” The doctor explained to him.

Cole was about to deny it without looking away from his kiddo when James entered the room and requested, “He’s not going to listen to anyone right now, Doctor, because she’s his life. He’ll not leave her in this condition. Please allow him to stay with her.”

The doctor nodded and checked Reyna while Cole sat down beside her on the stool, holding her hand carefully because he didn’t want to hurt her more.

“When will she regain her consciousness, Doctor?” He inquired.

“Twenty-fours are extremely crucial for her. If she does not wake up, she will go into a coma.” As the Doctor spoke, fresh tears streamed down his cheeks. It was like living in hell to imagine his life without her cheerful laughter and voice.

“Stay strong, Cole. She’ll regain her consciousness back.” James reassured him, placing his hand on her shoulder.

“I can’t, Dad, I can’t.” He shook his head, crying.

“Now only prayers can wake her up.” The doctor left after saying this, and Cole shed silent tears, gazing at her with profound pain in his eyes.

“Need you? I don’t fucking want to see your face. Just get lost, Reyna. I fucking don’t want you to be with me.” As his harsh words which he said to her echoed in his ears, he was filled with remorse. He was despising himself for putting his kiddo’s life in danger.

His lips quivered, and he cried out frantically, shutting his eyes. “I’m sorry, Kiddo. Please don’t give me such a hard punishment. Please wake up.” He begged, clasping her face.

His father cried with him, standing behind him.

On the other hand, outside Reyna’s room, when the Doctor told the same thing to Ethan and Ella, they both cried out fretfully.

‘No, I can’t fall weak, I have to be strong for my love.” Ella murmured, wiping her tears.

“Ethan, she’ll be fine. You have to brace yourself.” She hugged him and rubbed his back to calm him down.

“I’m so afraid, Ella. I don’t want to lose her. I’m already missing my cheerful sister. I want her back, Ella. I’m feeling so helpless.” He took out whatever was going inside his head in front of Ella and cried, clutching her top.

“Shh… baby, everything is gonna be fine.” She was extremely terrified for her best friend, but still, she was trying her best to calm him down because she couldn’t see the love of her life in that condition.

“Ella, I’m so fucking afraid.” He was repeatedly saying this, hugging her tighter and clenching her top.

He pulled apart after a few minutes after getting a bit better because of the warm arms of the love of his life.

“I’m glad you’re with me at this tough time.” He rested his head on her shoulder and closed his eyes.

“I’m always there for you, Ethan.” She leaned down and kissed his hair.
