Chapter 496
Chapter 496 The Culprit
Harper coldly laughed, exasperated, "I don't know either. But other than the excuses he's given, I can't think of why he would do such a thing."
"Harper, don't blame yourself and don't overthink it. It's not your fault. Even if he did it for you, what difference does it make? You didn't force him to do it, nor did you imply for him to do it. These are his actions, not yours." Annie eagerly tried to comfort Harper and stop her from feeling guilty.
But Harper was losing her mind, muttering to herself, "If all this is because of me, then I'm the real culprit. What's the difference between me and a murderer?"
"Harper!" Annie sharply interjected, "Don't say that. I've already said, it's not your fault. This is all Frank's doing. Let's go tell Benjamin right now, and let Benjamin make a decision."
"No!" Harper immediately grabbed Annie's hand, shaking her head. "I don't know how to tell him. I haven't thought it through. If he finds out, will he blame me?"
Harper was uneasy, unsure if Benjamin would believe her.
She hesitated.
Harper didn't go back to the office but asked Annie to take her back to the apartment instead.
All afternoon, Harper felt down. When she returned to the apartment, Angie was preparing dinner. Seeing her come in, Angie laughed, "Is it a holiday today? Why are you and Benjamin back so early?" Harper paused, asking, "Benjamin's home already?"
"Yes, he's been back for a while now. I found him here when I came."
Angie finished her words and continued preparing dinner.
Harper looked at the closed bedroom door with a serious expression and thought to herself, "Why did he come back so early? He's usually still working at this time. What's going on today?" She was keeping a secret and felt guilty, which made her even more prone to wild thoughts.
After confirming several times that Benjamin couldn't possibly know the truth, she finally put down her bag and entered the bedroom.
Benjamin was lying on the leather
sofa in the bedroom with his eyes closed as though he were sleeping Harper stowed her steps and walked over to him, bending down to look into his face to check if he was asleep.
But before she could get an answer, Benjamin's eyes suddenly opened. The next second, her hand was held, and he embraced her waist. With a sudden jerk, she found herself falling into Benjamin's arms.
With him there, she felt no fear or worry at all. She knew he would protect her.
She sat in his lap, looking into his sleepy eyes, and asked softly, "Why did you come home so early today?"
His voice was hoarse. "I finished work early because I had nothing important to do."
Harper nodded, noticing that he seemed to be in a bad mood, and asked again, "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine." He looked at her. "And you? Why are you back so early? Aren't you supposed to work overtime today?"
"I don't have to. I was a bit tired, so I came back early."
She said this, but her eyes were looking elsewhere.
Benjamin noticed her every move, asking in a low voice, "Where did you go today?"
Harper felt panicked, but just half a second later, she gained her composure, her expression calm and showing no sign of lying. She said, "I visited my grandmother."

"This afternoon."
"I went there too, but I didn't see you. Why is that?" He stared straight into her eyes, waiting for her answer.
