BON RESTAURANT, NEW YORK. “I thought you would stop by the house,” Carla said as she sat down opposite Jace with a huff. Jace shook his head. “I wasn’t sure of Nina’s movement. I didn’t want her to come home and find me with you. It might raise suspicions.” She nodded in agreement. “It would truly. So what did you find?” His face fell. “It’s quite serious, Carla. I do not know who started the cruel discussion. But I feel so sorry for Nina. There have been rumors spreading around about her. They said she is sleeping with Xander to maintain her place in the company.” “What? Why would anyone say something like that?” He sighed and tapped on his phone to show her the screenshot of the messages he found on the group page, just in case someone intended to delete it. “Check this out.” Carla blinked in disbelief as she read through the content. She clasped a hand over her mouth. “None of this is true. Don’t they have jobs to do?” “I wonder myself so that I will send all of it to Xander. I just wanted to talk to you first.” “You can’t send it to him.” “Why?” “You shouldn’t be the one to ask that question, Jace. We all know how Xander feels about Nina. He didn’t travel that distance to while away time. He would have returned if he had the time when she didn’t respond to his calls.” “Do you know why she is doing that?” “I wish I did. Anyway, you will wait until Xander returns to avoid ruining anything important. Until then, I will do everything possible to calm Nina, and you have to ward off those gossipmongers. She is in a delicate state at the moment. She doesn’t need spiteful people in her space. How long will it take for Xander to return?” “In less than two weeks.” “Not bad. I doubt if anything worse can happen before then.” “I doubt that too.” “I should leave now. Nina might be home any moment soon. Thanks, Jace.” He grinned up at her. “Anything for you, mama.” Jace chose to stay longer as he needed to attend to some work on his laptop. He attempted to call a waiter when his hands dropped slightly. Jace saw Dawn at the far end of the restaurant space, talking discreetly to someone who looked almost familiar. It felt like he had seen her somewhere before but couldn’t place it. He watched intently at the gestures made as they conversed. It seemed as if Dawn was trying to hurry up with it. Jace stood up and walked towards the table with his hands in his pocket. “Make sure you make it more intense. Do not stop until I tell you to.” Dawn was saying until she sighted Jace. She didn’t wait for Jace to speak before sending off the other person. Jace stared at the person’s back with a curious frown. “What? Are you interested in her?” Dawn taunted, trying to draw his attention away. “I was hoping by now you would know my taste. What were you discussing with that figure, Dawn?” He asked. “Since when have you been so interested in my business?” “Not so long ago. Several things have been happening in the company lately, and I wonder if you know anything about them.” Dawn raised a brow at him to see if he was making a joke, but he looked serious. “Why do you think I would know about it?” “Well, it’s about Nina. And aside from Xander and myself, you know her too. She has been struggling lately, and I wonder who the evil perpetrator is.” She hissed in contempt. “So how is that my business?” “It might be. I know you do not like the innocent lady who has done nothing to you. It won’t be a surprise if it turns out that you are the one spreading rumors about her.” Jace said, not batting an eye. Dawn bit down on her lips as she glared hard at him. “Let me warn you, Jace. I do not care about anything you think of me. But coming right to my face to accuse me wrongly is a long stretch, even for you. I will not take it lightly with you if you disrespect me like this ever again. Who the fuck is Nina? Why should I concern myself with her? Do I look jobless to you? Let this be the last time, and it is a warning. Do not make me lose my temper.” She glowered, snatched her bag off the table, and left. Jace heaved as he returned to his seat. Something tells him Dawn knows about it. But he has no proof of it. The gossip has little information that only a close person would have known. And he can’t seem to think of any other person except her. He checked through the group page for any sign of Dawn. But she isn’t there. He almost felt stupid for accusing her of her face. But then his instincts never fail him. Something has to do with her. His phone rang, jolting him out of his thoughts. Jace groaned when it turned out to be Xander. “Hello, brother.” He mumbled with no enthusiasm. Xander grunted from the other end. “You sound like you miss me.” “That’s a pure fallacy, man. You should sue whoever is whispering such nonsense to you.” “Shut the hell up. Talk to me about what’s going on.” “I hate it when you try to probe me for no reason. You have people who report to your email daily, so why not ask them?” Jace said tiredly. “I am asking you about Nina. What is it with the attitude?” “Is she still ignoring your calls?” “She already blocked my line. I want to be certain she is alright. That shouldn’t be too much to ask of you, don’t you think?” “Xander, the truth is you are beginning to stress me out. Nina is a full-grown adult, and if she isn’t picking up your calls, she doesn’t want to. I bet Carla already assures you she is fine, yet you keep calling me. She doesn’t need a nanny and not a pestering being like you.” There was a long silence on the other end, and for a moment, Jace thought he had ended the call. “Xander?” “It’s alright, thanks, though.” Xander mused, ending the call. Jace cursed under his breath as he inhaled sharply. His big mouth will be the death of him. Tired suddenly, he picked up his things and decided to head home instead.
