Chapter 45 A Shared Secret
Chapter 45 A Shared Secret
"A good face?" Alexia froze.
Stefan gave a sad smile. "Yes, you look like a person I used to know. She passed away but if I didn’t know any better, I would have thought you were her daughter ..."
When he entered the room, she startled him. Alexia looked too much like his past wife. Her eyes, in particular, were a spitting image of Ning's.
"That... Mr.... Chi, who are you talking about?" Alexia asked with a curious blink.
Chaim pursed his lips without speaking, examining Stefan, obviously wanting to hear the answer.
Stefan, however, waved his hand without replying, "It's all in the past. She’s been dead for over twenty years, so let's not mention it!"
"Okay." Alexia could see the deep pain hidden under his eyes and understood, asking no more questions, guessing in her heart that the person could be his former lover or his closest relative.
"It's getting late." Stefan looked at his watch and patted his trousers as he stood up. "Chaim, I'll leave first then."
"Hmm," Chaim answered in a clear, cold voice.
When Stefan saw he had no intention of moving to see him off, he sighed inwardly. It seemed there was really no possibility for Chaim and Eve. Otherwise, his attitude wouldn't be so cold.
The company's main business was to provide a wide range of products and services to the public. Thinking of that, even though Stefan loved his daughter, his heart couldn't help but feel a sense of resentment toward her.
After Stefan left, Alexia looked at Chaim and asked, "Chaim, is Ms. Chi awake?"
"Not yet. She won’t wake until late this evening," Chaim replied indifferently.
Alexia hesitated for a moment. "Then you’ll be going to keep her company this evening?"
Chaim wanted to reply he would, but when he saw her bleary eyes, his heart trembled and he was somewhat speechless.
After a couple of seconds, he responded. "It depends."
Little did he know that his answer, for Alexia, was no different from him saying yes.
She gave a soft “oh “and stopped talking, her mood having fallen.
Chaim didn't know why she was upset but didn't ask, instead deciding to change the topic "Grandpa called you yesterday."
"Grandpa?" Alexia looked at him, "What does Grandpa want?"
"Nothing important, just asking why you haven't gone back for dinner yet."
Alexia remembered that before she went to Swift's group yesterday, she promised to accompany master Lancaster to dinner that evening.
"What did you tell Grandpa?" She grabbed Chaim’s hand.
Chaim looked at Alexia with downcast eyes, glancing down at Alexia’s hand grasping his but not reacting or pulling away. "I told him you had another stomach bug and were admitted to the hospital."
"That's good." Alexia breathed a sigh of relief.
She was afraid he would give her random excuses to make it perfunctory. With his cold, sullen, and trouble-hating nature, it wouldn’t have been out of his character to do so.
"Grandpa also said he would be coming over to see you." Chaim flung out another shocking sentence.
Alexia was anxious, "But in my current situation, how can I meet with grandpa?"
It's not like she's really suffering from a stomach bug. What kind of person with a stomach bug laid in bed and couldn’t move?
Grandpa Lancaster started with nothing and created the Lancaster family empire. Even in his old age, he wasn’t easy to fool. If he came to visit he would find Alexia’s condition too suspicious.
"Chaim, you can’t let Grandpa come visit." Alexia looked bitter.
Chaim, however, calmly stared at her. "Grandpa is coming, and it only makes us look more suspicious if I tell him not to so you'll use your acting skills so he doesn't notice you had surgery."
"But I don't have any acting skills!" Alexia was on the verge of tears.
"No acting skills? You can't pretend to sleep?" Chaim squinted at her.
Alexia's expression lurched. Yeah, she could pretend to be asleep! At that thought, she immediately calmed down, and not only did she not panic anymore, she even had a little bit of joy inside.
She and Chaim were teaming up together to fool Grandpa Lancaster. She felt a bit sorry for Grandpa Lancaster, but it was really exciting. It was like they had a secret they couldn't tell anyone and she was even looking forward to Grandpa Lancaster's arrival.
Alexia pulled at the covers and couldn't help but laugh. Content © NôvelDrama.Org 2024.
Chaim raised his eyebrows slightly, "What are you laughing at?"
"No, nothing, I just thought of something funny. "Alexia smiled and looked at him.
Chaim wasn’t interested in what she was thinking, and when his mobile rang, he took it out and answered it.
Two minutes later, he put away his phone and stood up.
Alexia looked at him blearily. "You're leaving?"
"Yes, I have to go back to the office, Joseph has arrived." Chaim patiently replied.
Alexia smiled, "Go on then, Be safe."
"I will." Chaim straightened the folds on his suit as he spoke. "If there's anything you need, you can call me. I'll be back after I finish."
"Good." Alexia's eyes curled.
Chaim nodded and turned to walk away. In fact, he didn't know why he’d said that latter sentence. But seeing the way she smiled, it seemed like that would be fine.
Shortly after Chaim left the hospital, Grand Lancaster arrived. Alexia closed her eyes and pretended to sleep as she had agreed to do before.
Sure enough, Grandpa Lancaster didn't stay long when he saw she wasn't awake and left, only instructing Aunt Song to take good care of her before he left.
Aunt Song was tempted to tell the truth about Ms. White's hospitalization, but thinking of Mr. Lancaster’s warning, she held back.
"Aunt Song, has Grandpa left?" Alexia peeled back the covers to reveal a pair of dripping eyes and asked when no movement was heard in the room for several minutes.
Aunt Song looked at her with amusement and replied, "Don't worry Ms. Alexia, Master has already left."
"Great." Alexia exhaled. "That blanket was suffocating me."
"Oh? Who told you, Ms. Alexia, to pretend to be asleep to deceive your lordship by covering your face for fear that you might reveal your act?."
"I couldn’t help it! If I didn’t, Grandpa would’ve been able to see at a glance I was pretending to be asleep." Alexia said helplessly as she brushed the hair out of her face.
"That's true. But, Ms. Alexia,, it's not right for you and Mr. Lancaster to hide this from Master Lancaster like this. Sooner or later he will find out." Aunt Song said, worried. "What will you do then?"
Alexia was silent for a moment. "The main thing is that Chaim doesn't want to tell Grandpa, so I'll just go along it. As for when the time comes, then we’ll talk about it then."
"Of course Mr. Lancaster doesn't want Master Lancaster to know. The Master hates the Chi family most of all and if knew Mr. Lancaster asked you to donate your bone marrow for the sake of the Chi I wouldn’t be surprised if Mr. Lancaster got the horse whip." Aunt Song skimmed her lips.
Alexia's eyes widened. "Really? A horse whip?"
"Of course. His Lordship beat Mr. Lancaster three years ago."
"Oh my god!" Alexia covered her mouth.
Chaim was actually whipped with a horsewhip by Grandpa Lancaster.
"Well, let's not talk about that. I bet you’re hungry, right?" Aunt Song was afraid that if she said too much, she would accidentally reveal something she shouldn't, so she hastily changed the subject and served a bowl of chicken brother from the thermos, stirring and blowing at the same time.
"I just asked Dr. Hard specifically. Ms. Alexia, you can eat something light and after the anesthesia is all gone, you can have tonic. Then I will give you rich, hardy soup every day, so you can get well sooner."
"Thank you, Aunt Song." Alexia was both touched and a bit teary-eyed.
After eating the broth, Alexia felt some strength return and she wasn’t in as much pain either. Her mood couldn’t be better.
"Aunt Song, has my mother ever looked for me?"
