Chapter 46: Why Do You Keep Hurting Me
Chapter 46: Why Do You Keep Hurting Me
Alvera's expression was hesitant for a moment before nodding at Roland. "Mr. Francois."
"Yes, looks like you're quite free today, seeing as you have the time to accompany Mr. Perez to the
gala."
Standing next to him, Owen raised his eyebrows. "Mr. Francois, do you know Alvera?"
"Know her? I definitely do."
Roland swept his glance over Alvera.
Alvera felt inexplicably nervous as she returned his gaze.
She was afraid that Roland might expose their relationship in public.
Seeing her pleading gaze, Roland felt a twinge of anger.
This woman was actually pleading with him.
Why, was she afraid that Owen would find out about their relationship?
He raised his eyebrows, his expression cold. "Alvera, didn't you tell Mr. Perez about me?"
Owen looked at Alvera as well.
Roland felt a sense of satisfaction when he saw her nervousness. "Good," he thought. "She's scared."
But he knew not to cross the line. "I'm your boss," he said. "You're embarrassing me."
Owen laughed. "You didn't tell me you were working at the Empire Group!"
"I've been there for less than a month." Alvera didn't look at Roland. "Mr. Perez, I would like to go home
now."
"I'll send you back."
"No need." She smiled at him. "Thank you for inviting me to the gala today, but I'm not comfortable in
this kind of setting, so it's a little awkward for me. I know the roads of Calgary well. I can head home
myself."
After that, she turned around and left.
When Owen was about to go after her when Roland said lightly, "Mr. Perez, Brett is still waiting for you.
You shouldn't leave without saying goodbye to him."
Owen looked at Alvera's leaving figure worriedly.
Roland put his glass on the table beside him. "I'm done talking with Brett anyway, so I'll be leaving now
as well. I'll give my employee a ride home."
"Thank you, Mr. Francois."
Roland smirked. "You're welcome."
He stuck his hands in his pockets and left.
By the time he reached the main entrance of the Mountain Club, Alvera had already disappeared.
He frowned, his expression chilly, then took out his phone to call her.
Alvera picked up the call quickly. "Hello."
"Where are you?"
"In a taxi."
"Come back, I had alcohol. I need a driver."
Alvera hung up the phone. She hesitated for three minutes before telling the driver, "Please turn back
to the Mountain Club."
When she arrived back at the club, Roland was standing at the entrance, smoking a cigarettes with one
hand in his pocket.
His tall and straight figure was a scenery in and of itself, but to Alvera, it was a scene of gloomy
darkness.

She got out of the taxi and walked over to him, keeping a careful distance from him.
"Mr. Francois, where is your car?"
Roland smiled at her.
Alvera could not tell the meaning behind his smile.
"Come here."
Alvera paused for a while before taking a step towards him.
Before she could react further, Roland grabbed her and kissed her passionately.
Alvera closed her eyes and struggled against his kiss. "Roland, don't do this here."
She didn't expect that he would treat her like this here.
"Are you ashamed? Why are you seducing Owen Perez, then?"
"I didn't," she said, with a touch of grievance in her eyes. "I didn't seduce him."
"I saw it with my own eyes. You had your arm around his. I'm not blind, you know."
She swallowed and said nothing.
"You're bold, Alvera Earhart. Do you really think you can have every man in Calgary under your
thumb?"
"The relationship between Mr. Perez and I is clean."
He let go of her and threw the car keys to her. "It's not for you to decide. Go home."
Alvera adjusted her gown, sighed, and left with him.
She remained silent on the drive home, while Roland fumed beside her.
She could feel his anger.
She knew that she will not be able to escape punishment tonight.
She began wondering if it was worth it to cause an accident so that they could go to the hospital
instead of going home.
As she was thinking, she involuntarily stepped on the accelerator.
Roland noticed immediately and grabbed the steering wheel.
"Alvera Earhart!"
His angry roar brought her back to reality. She must have lost her mind just now.
"Sorry, I'm a little distracted."
"You've just separated with that guy for a few minutes, and you're already thinking of him?"
Alvera bit her lips and took a deep breath, completely ignoring him.
"Did I guess right? Nothing to say to that?"
Alvera felt her anger pooling in her.
They drove straight home to Floral Villa. Roland opened the door and got out as soon as the car
stopped, and slammed the door loudly behind him.
...
Alvera was still pondering whether she could find a way to avoid him tonight.
She opened the door, but before she could get out of the car, Roland grabbed her and pulled her out.
She could barely keep up with him in her high heels as he dragged her by the arm towards the door.
He opened the door of the villa, picked her up, threw her on the sofa and leaned over her.
...
Alvera bit her lower lip. "Roland, are you too immersed in the drama or have you forgotten that our
marriage is just contractual? There are only three months left. We will be complete strangers after that."
He sneered at her plans for the future.
There was still three months to go, and she was already looking for his replacement.
"So what? At least in these three months, you are my wife, and as my wife, you have to be loyal to me."
"How many times do I have to repeat myself, there is nothing between me and Mr. Perez."
"Have you ever seen anyone admitting to their shamelessness?"
"You..." Alvera said with a trace of anger in her eyes, but stopped when her phone rang from inside her
bag.
...
Roland grabbed her bag with one hand and poured out all the contents in it.
He picked up her cell phone and glanced at it.
The caller was Owen.
He showed the phone to Alvera. "What would happen if he knows you're my wife?"
She reached out to grab the phone. "Give it back to me," she said, but he raised his hand out of her
reach.
...
He smirked. "Do you really want to answer your lover's call so much? Fine."
He handed the phone to her. "Answer it. Answer now."
He sneered at her, almost out of his mind with anger.
"Do you have to humiliate me like this?"
"Humiliate? Are you afraid of humiliation? Would you rather I answer the phone, then?"
He swiped across the screen casually and picked up the call.
Owen's voice came from the other end of the line.
"Ms. Alvera, it's me. Did you manage to get home safely?"
"I... "
"What's wrong with your voice?"
Alvera looked at Roland and clutched the sofa tightly, "I'm fine. I'm working out."
"I wondered why you were panting. Thank you for helping me today, I'll treat you to a meal some other
day."
"Okay, then I'll hang up."
After hanging up the phone, Alvera looked at Roland.
He grabbed her under the chin. "Are you very tolerable?"
She took a few deep breaths to quell the sadness in her heart. After a while, she said morosely, "Mr.
Perez saved me after the attack on the beach that night. He found me dying and sent me to the
hospital. When he called me to ask for help tonight, I couldn't refuse, which is why I went to the gala
with him. Was I wrong?"
"Roland Francois," she continued, "I really wonder sometimes, is your heart made of stone? Why do
you keep hurting me?"
